Candy is one of my favorite things to paint ( and eat....I have a huge sugar tooth). Why is it one of my favorite things? Well, first of all the colors, they are bright, brilliant and gorgeous. Don't believe me? Stop reading this and go take a look at a gum drop or some licorice, look at the colors and the textures, the way the light shines off them. See, they are screaming to be painted or drawn. In fact just today I taught a watercolor class where students created still-life's with candy and painted them. Each came out different, each was wonderful and had a light hearted nostalgic feel. Funny how painting a gummy bear can be complex and fun. When you paint candy try to stay in the primary colors it will keep things nice and bright. No ivory black shadows it will distract, instead try a soft cobalt blue or ultramarine mix.
What's my point? Candy is a fun and cheap still life, it doesn't wither and die like flowers and comes in a huge variety of types and styles. Next time you are at the checkout and see some candy that catches your eye...get it...paint it...and if all else fails you can always eat it. No one will ever know.
